OUR SERVICES | Project Management
Where there is a gap in service delivery and a solution, the management team at Work Rehab will innovate the change. This has lead to an increase in the Project Management arm of Work Rehab. We are becoming quite familiar with the art of pilot projects to ensure evidence based reports are available for executive decision making.
A recent Pilot Project was with RSL QLD and some of their most vulnerable members. Through the perseverance and hard work from both parties, approval was granted by RSL Qld to fund a Pilot Project to explore the potential of a healthcare model to assist RSL members with complex needs. This commenced in October 2016 and is now in the final stages. 9 members in the Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay and Brisbane regions participated, of which 6 were able to achieve their rehabilitation goals.
DVA were able to assist where possible, and where members were not eligible for DVA assistance, RSL Qld funded a short rehabilitation intervention program. Several of these members have quoted to the OT working with them, that their lives have changed for the better. Whilst the pilot study conducted is small in numbers, the outcomes were remarkably successful. So much so that we have presented an opportunity to RSL Qld to develop their own Rehabilitation Program to assist those members who are not eligible for assistance elsewhere.
Vocational Education Pilot
Work Rehab has established a strong relationship with a motivated and proactive RTO provider who is currently providing RPL assessments and reports for our medically discharged veterans. Our innovative program has proved to be a highly motivating and empowering step in the transition of the veteran from military to civilian employment.
Timely Engagement Pilot
Work Rehab was invited by DVA to participate in this pilot to address the need for early intervention and smooth transition from military to civilian life. It is now part of the standard rehabilitation process.
Veterans Centre – Sydney Northern Beaches
The outcome of the RSL QLD project was presented to the Veteran Centre Sydney Northern Beaches, Centre Manager (VCSNB), Ben Webb who is highly instrumental is assisting veterans in his area. Ben is a young veteran himself, who understands the tribulations of returning home after injury and the transition then to civilian life. The results of the QLD pilot have encouraged Ben and he is currently working with RSL NSW to implement a program in Sydney and throughout NSW.
This is the innovative and meaningful work that Work Rehab is especially proud of. We are health professionals, with a passion for achieving outcomes. We don’t simply want to be a number on the insurance or legislation wheel, we make a difference.
Assistance Dogs Australia
Another project in the wings is with Assistance Dogs Australia, VCSNB are involved and supportive of this project. There are very few studies exploring the effectiveness of assistance dogs working with veterans with PTSD to reduce their symptoms and increase their quality of life. Whilst it seems obvious that this is a great idea, the evidence is minimal and therefore funding programs such as this is difficult for the executive decision makers. We are working with a team of Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Assistance Dog Trainers and Veterans to make this a reality.
Assistance Dogs Australia is a national charity which trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to help people with disabilities, providing them with greater freedom and independence. Since inception they have placed over 200 Assistance Dogs across Australia. Dogs are placed free of charge to a wide range of clients. It costs in excess of $30,000 to train and place a dog, and Assistance Dogs Australia receives no government funding. If you are able to assist with a donation, please visit www.assistancedogs.org.au.
